That being said, the students in the Honors sections of biology are given more options for their sophomore science class than those students in the College Prep sections. Additionally, those students that want to be in Honors chemistry next year must have a teacher recommendation from two subjects: biology and math.
I do not think it is quite fair for students, especially those that are only 15 years old, to be pigeonholed into tracks and lose sight of the opportunities that are truly endless in their future. Then again, life isn't fair, and high school is no different. Instead of pushing these strict guidelines and specific requirements on students, why not allow them the opportunity to make choices and, not surprisingly, some mistakes along the way. If there is a student that struggled to get a B in College Prep biology but wants to work his or her butt off even more to attempt to scrape out a C in Honors Chemistry then so be it. Just as in the real world, you are presented with limitless opportunities and it is up to the individual to make the most.or least out of them. We can start to promote this way of striving for more and individuality at the grass roots level and it has the potential to produce monumental change, at least for a handful of students that otherwise wouldn't have been granted the opportunity.
